The View to 2020
MEG Energy’s growth plan targets production capacity of 260,000 barrels per day by 2020. By expanding in stages, we can mitigate project construction risk by managing capital requirements and peak workforce levels, and pursuing standardized approaches to facility design. While current plans are based on proven technologies, a staged approach also allows us to incorporate technological improvements as we continue to learn and innovate with each successive stage.
| Start-up |
Incremental design capacity (barrels per day) |
Cumulative design capacity (barrels per day) |
|
|---|---|---|---|
| Christina Lake Phases 1&2 | In production | 25,000 | 25,000 |
| Christina Lake Phase 2B | 2013 | 35,000 | 60,000 |
| Christina Lake Phase 3A | 2016 | 50,000 | 110,000 |
| Christina Lake Phase 3B | 2018 | 50,000 | 160,000 |
| Surmont Phase 1 | 2018 | 50,000 | 210,000 |
| Christina Lake Phase 3C | 2020 | 50,000 | 260,000 |
Beyond 2020, further staged expansion is planned at MEG’s Surmont Project. Our Growth Properties to the south and west of MEG’s current operations offer significant additional development opportunities, which we continue to evaluate.
The timing and size of future project phases is subject to further refinement and is dependent on a number of factors including:
-
The timing and terms of regulatory approvals
-
The implementation of improving technologies
-
Capturing efficiencies associated with the standardization of project phases
All stages of Surmont are subject to regulatory and Board of Directors approvals. All incremental expansion to production capacity requires a ramp-up period before full production is achieved, which may be influenced by geology, steam availability, plant performance or other factors.
