Community Relations

MEG's mission is to establish and maintain mutually beneficial relationships with each community in which we conduct our operations.

Public Consultation

Our Public Consultation Program is designed to engage with relevant stakeholders associated with our Christina Lake Regional Project to ensure the sustainability of our operations. It focuses on:

  • building a healthy, working relationship with various stakeholders through early and ongoing consultation;
  • facilitating public understanding of the proposed project and its potential impact, both positive and negative, on the stakeholders;
  • identifying areas of importance to stakeholders and their priorities, issues and concerns related to the proposed development and other developments in the area;
  • implementing issue discussion and conflict resolution to maximize the opportunity for mutually acceptable solutions; and promoting effective communication between stakeholders and MEG regarding all project phases from planning, construction, and operation through to decommissioning and reclamation.
  • The consultation process will be an ongoing process from initial planning through each phase of the project leading to eventual project decommissioning and abandonment. Our goals are to involve stakeholdes in planning, design and implementation of the project so that issues and concerns are addressed and positive impacts are realized.
  • In addition, we will ensure that relevant stakeholders will have the opportunity to:
  • review information related to the planning, design and implementation of the pilot project, and the commercial project phases;
  • identify issues and concerns relative to the planning and implementation process;
  • provide feedback to the project planning process to assist with MEG's overall decision making process; and receive feedback from MEG on specific issues and interests.

Environmental Protection

MEG is committed to being an exemplary steward of the environment and we are working hard to ensure our operations meet or exceed all environmental protection standards applicable to the oil sands industry. Our goal is to exercise a standard of care in all of our activities that balances the need to protect the environment, comply with all regulatory requirements while, to the extent possible, meeting the needs of local communities and stakeholder interests.

MEG utilizes an in-situ (in place) method of production. Compared to open pit mining methods, MEG's in-situ method yields a much smaller environmental footprint. In addition, fewer water handling issues are associated with in-situ production.

MEG will conduct further Environmental Impact Assessments that focus on all aspects of the Christina Lake Regional Project's impact on the environment, including air and water quality, terrestrial, human health, wildlife, and historical and traditional land use. MEG has also implemented a comprehensive Health, Safety and Environmental Management System in order to minimize the health, safety and environmental impacts of the Christina Lake Regional Project. Programs developed within the System cover environmental approvals and licenses, spill response, waste management, energy conservation, air emissions monitoring (including noise), land management, and site remediation and reclamation.

Economic Growth

We believe that communities adjacent to our projects should have opportunity to realize benefits from our operations. We also believe that MEG can benefit from access to goods and services available from communities adjacent to our projects. We will work diligently with these communities to identify and implement appropriate strategies to attain mutually beneficial objectives.

We will use appropriate procedures to ensure that community providers of goods and services have access to information in a timely manner concerning our needs. We will ensure that purchases of goods and services in the local communities is based on the principle of merit by taking into account cost effectiveness, timeliness, and capabilities to provide according to our standards and requirements.

We believe that our project will increase opportunity for local people to obtain employment and thus bring benefit to the communities. Our contractors and their subcontractors are being encouraged to employ people from the local communities. Employment of local people will be undertaken in a manner that ensures MEG's standards of safety, quality of work, timeliness, economics and environmental protection will not be compromised.

We encourage people in local communities, both students and adults, to advance their education and to prepare themselves for employment and careers within the petroleum industry. We will work with community agencies, with other industry companies, with government, and with educational and training institutions to assist them in identifying resources and means for community people to attain their employment goals.
