Executive Officers Derek EvansDerek Evans
President and Chief Executive Officer, and Director

Derek was appointed as the President and Chief Executive Officer, and a Director in August 2018. He is a veteran oil and gas industry executive with over 35 years of experience. From May 2009 to March 2018, he served as the President, CEO and Director of Pengrowth Energy, where he led the Company through a major transformation, streamlining its asset base from 35 properties to two growth assets, with over $9 billion of development opportunities. Prior to joining Pengrowth, Derek was the President, CEO and Director of Focus Energy Trust, a dividend paying royalty trust company. During his tenure at Focus, Derek was successful in increasing the market valuation approximately five times, while distributing more than $400 million to unitholders. Mr. Evans holds a Bachelor of Science in Mining Engineering from Queen’s University and is a registered professional engineer in Alberta.

Chief Financial Officer

Eric is the Chief Financial Officer at MEG Energy. Prior to joining MEG in 2013, he spent eight years as a Managing Director in the Global Energy group at BMO Capital Markets based in Calgary, where his role included providing strategic financial and capital raising advice to Canadian oil and gas companies. Eric’s previous experience includes leadership roles with major Canadian and U.S. investment banks based in Calgary, Toronto and New York, with a focus on the Canadian oil and gas sector.  Prior to entering Investment Banking, he worked with two global public practice accounting firms. Eric holds a Bachelor of Administration degree from the University of Regina and is a Charted Professional Accountant and a member of the Charted Professional Accountants of Alberta.

Chief Operating Officer

Chi-Tak is the Chief Operating Officer at MEG Energy. With over 33 years of experience in the oil and gas industry, he has been a leader in thermal development in the oil sands. Since joining MEG in 2004 he has held roles of increasing responsibility with the Company, with oversight for reservoir management and project development, facility operations, cost leadership, and technological development and application. Chi-Tak was promoted to his current role as Chief Operating Officer in 2018. Prior to joining MEG, he held technical engineering and leadership roles with Petro Canada and Imperial Oil.  Early in his career, He studied under and worked with the late Dr. Roger Butler at the Underground Test Facility (UTF), where he provided reservoir and production engineering leadership in the first successful field demonstration of the steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) process in the Athabasca region using surface drilled horizontal well pairs. Chi-Tak holds a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in Chemical and Petroleum Engineering from the University of Calgary, and is a registered professional engineer in Alberta.

Senior Vice President, Legal & General Counsel

Grant is the Senior Vice President, Legal and General Counsel at MEG Energy. Grant joined MEG in 2013 as the Vice President, Legal and General Counsel, and was promoted to his current position in 2017. Before joining MEG , Grant was the Executive Vice President, Investments and Chief Counsel of the Emergo Group of Companies, a global private equity firm. He was also a member of Emergo’s Global Portfolio Investment Committee, co-leader of the Group’s Transactions Team, and sat on the Boards of Directors of the parent corporation, its key subsidiaries and various entities in which Emergo holds investments. Prior to Emergo, he held roles in asset management and investment banking, and worked in private practice as a corporate and securities lawyer with a focus on energy services and technology. Grant holds a BA from the University of Alberta, an LLB from Dalhousie University and an MBA from Pennsylvania State University. In 2011, Grant earned the Certified Director designation from the Institute of Corporate Directors and was appointed Queen’s Counsel by the Province of Alberta.


Aidan Mills
Vice President, Downstream

Aidan is the Vice President of Downstream at MEG Energy. He has over 25 years of experience in the oil and gas industry, working both in Canada and internationally. Prior to joining MEG in 2017, he held senior roles in commodity marketing and trading with Goldman Sachs and Husky Oil. Aidan began his career with BP, where he held various roles of increasing responsibility covering engineering, corporate, marketing and trading, and business development. Aidan is a Chartered Engineer, holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Honors) from Edinburgh University and an MBA with Distinction from Edinburgh Business School.

VP, Finance & Corporate Services

John is the Vice President, Finance and Controller at MEG Energy. He joined MEG in 2010 as the Controller, and was appointed to his current role in 2013. Prior to joining MEG, John held various senior financial roles in the oil and gas industry, including: Vice President, Finance and Chief Financial Officer of Builders Energy Services Trust; Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for Calpine Canada and the Calpine Power Income Fund; and Controller for Numac Energy. John holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Calgary. He is a Chartered Professional Accountant, and a member of the Chartered Professional Accountants of Alberta.

VP, Investor Relations and External Communications

John is the Vice President, Investor Relations and External Communications at MEG Energy. Has over 30 years of experience in the oil and gas industry. Prior to joining MEG 2010, he spent 25 years with Suncor Energy, where he held various senior financial roles in the oil sands and natural gas divisions. John headed up the investor relations department at Suncor from 1993 until his retirement from the company in September 2010. He holds a Bachelor of Administration from the University of Regina. John is a Chartered Professional Accountant, and a member of the Chartered Professional Accountants of Alberta.

VP, Projects

Chris is the Vice President, Projects at MEG Energy. He joined MEG in 2009 as the Projects Director, a role he held until 2011 when he was promoted to his current position. Chris has 25 years of experience in engineering, design and construction of oil, gas and power generation facilities. Prior to joining MEG, Chris held various management roles, including Project Manager and Manager of Business Development at Sherritt International Corp. and Project Manager and Manager of Business Development at SNC-Lavalin / Titan Projects. Chris received a Bachelor of Science (Chemical Engineering) from the University of Calgary and a registered professional engineer in Alberta.
